The Fragrance Route & Fest
Fragrance Fest 2019
On Saturday 9 March it is Fragrance Fest day, the once a year occasion when all venues on the scenic Fragrance Route open their doors! Come and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, countryside ambience, fresh air, food stalls and art and craft on this country meander halfway between Mossel Bay and George. Make it a PROE safari: stop to buy local products and experience a variety of tastes along the way.
Now in its fifth year, this unique little Fest has become a firm favourite among locals. This year there are 10 stops to visit, open from 07h00 to 17h00. Please note that venues choose their own hours, so plan your Fest trip accordingly! Bring a cooler bag and picnic blanket, a hat for the sun and an umbrella in case of rain. Toilets are available at almost all venues and, in case of bad weather, indoor facilities as well. CASH only at stalls, no credit cards.
Book in advance for the Kobus Halliday Car Museum tour and for the Hakuna Matata wildlife spotting “Hap & Stap”. Brothers Coffee Roastery will have a relaxed vibe with Leon van Niekerk on guitar, and new venue Avant Garden offers a gin tasting and fishing fun with “catch and release” at the dam. At game farm Hakuna Matata you can picnic under the trees - buy food at their stalls, and bring along your own picnic blanket, wine and glasses. Across the road new camping venue Molenrivier will also be open for picnics on the day, but you have to bring along your food and drinks. Ideal for a PROE picnic!
Due to roadworks there will be one “stop and go” right at the start of the Fragrance Route, corner Amy Searle and Sorgfontein Road - also the entrance to Hilltop Farm Stall and the Kobus Halliday Car Museum. All efforts will be made to make the waiting time here as short as possible.
Detailed programmes will be available at the Great Brak Museum, the tourist office at De Dekke, and at businesses in the Midbrak area by late February.
Visit the Great Brak Museum (08h30-14h00 - 044 620 3338) for programmes, information regarding the Friemersheim church and Volkwyn chair, slide-shows, and good coffee. Miniature wire-art Volkwyn chairs also for sale. Nearby at the Kobus Halliday Car Museum tours will be conducted by owner Kobus at 08h00, 10h00 and 16h00. R40, no children under 14. Bookings only, until Friday 8 March at noon. Contact Fest organizer Nelma at 082 9707 213 / firstname.lastname@example.org.
Start your PROE safari at Hilltop Farm Stall (07h00-16h00 - 044 620 2668) with tasty chicken bites on offer and farm fresh chicken to buy. Enjoy freshly roasted coffee, gourmet pancakes and cake at Brothers Coffee Roastery, open 08h00-17h00 (Sunel 073 159 6734). Also a great last coffee stop on the way back! Relaxed vibe with Leon van Niekerk on guitar, unique “coffee bag” bags and more. Sand art stall for the kids where they can be creative at a small fee, sand art products also for sale.
The next stop is at Die Vlakte turn-off, where a short travel of 1 km will bring you to new art gallery and “On Pond” venue Avant Garden (08h00-17h00 - Maryna 084 500 2023). Gin tasting, Leeukloof cheese, lasagne and salad, boerewors rolls, ice cream, baked and bottles goodies, farm fresh vegetables and milk, artists and their art, jewellery, plants and more. Fishing fun with “catch and release” at the dam!
Further down the road at Hakuna Matata (Lustine 079 743 2800) their annual very popular wildlife spotting “Hap & Stap” will be from 07h00-12h30 - bookings essential, limited tickets on the day. From 08h00-16h00 - mini pop-up farm market with live entertainment, stalls and picnic area under the trees. Find all details here.
Turn off opposite the Hakuna Matata exit, drive 500 m, and you get to new venue Molenrivier (08h00 -17h00, Jerry 082 854 8805). Stand a chance to win a week-end for 4 people at this brand-new camping area! It will be open for picnics (bring own food) on Fragrance Fest day - enjoy this “kloof” stop on the Route and leave your details in their visitor’s book to enter the Lucky Draw.
Travel on the last bit of road still to be tarred this year to Forest Hill/Santa Bonné Proteas (08h00-15h00, Adine 083 553 1500). Always busy and popular - here you can buy export quality proteas, fynbos and protea plants. Fynbos exhibition, coffee and tea will be for sale.
Continue on the recently tarred road to the Friemersheim Stalls in Kretzen Street (08h00-16h00, Petra 082 957 7715). Volstruispotjie and afvalpot, from 12h00, pork chops with pap, Georgies fish nuggets, chicken pies, roosterkoek, gemmerbier, lavender plants, succulents, craft, baked and bottled goodies, lavender infused foodie products, Gonna honey, farm fresh Blomfontein meat (frozen), biltong and droëwors, and more. Support Petra’s stall and win a Game Drive for 2 valued at R980! Botlierskop Lucky Draw @ 15h30.
The Volkwyn Family Reunion stall in Kretzen Street (08h00-16h00, Melvin 082 860 1853) will have a coffee bar from 09h00, their annual spitbraai (roasted pig) from 12h00, pork burgers, and popular Watkins Rubbing Ointments.
Visit the Pop-up Shweshwe Stop @ Friemersheim Stalls: 08h00-16h00 (Nelma 082 970 7213). Buy locally produced, truly South African articles and meet Cinty, owner of the Friemersheim Sewing Group - home to the Shweshwe Stop shop and work creation project. Cinty’s tasty milk tart also for sale.
Travel further on gravel road to the Botlierskop Bellevue Restaurant @ The Village Lodge (044 333 0291/044 696 6055). Bookings essential for lunch (12h00-15h00) and dinner (18h00-22h00). The road between Friemersheim and The Village Lodge is probably the most scenic part of the Route, and - depending on the time of day - you have a good chance of spotting game along Kleinvlei Road on the way back.
